1The short version
DiskBuddy is a disk analyzer, so it reads every file name and size on the drives you point it at. None of that ever leaves your Mac. Scanning, hashing, duplicate matching and cleanup all run locally, and the app has no account, no sync and no analytics.
The one thing the app sends anywhere is your licence key, to check it is valid. The website collects the usual visit analytics, and buying a licence gives us your email address so we can send you the key.
2What the app collects
Nothing about your files. No filename, path, folder listing, file content, hash or size is transmitted or stored anywhere but on your own Mac.
When you activate, and occasionally afterwards while online, the app contacts our licence server with:
- your licence key,
- a random identifier the app generates for that installation, so a key can be tied to the Macs it is active on,
- the name of your Mac as set in System Settings, so you can tell your Macs apart when you deactivate one.
That is the whole request. The server records when each installation was first activated, when it last checked in, and when it was deactivated. If the check cannot be made, the app keeps working for two weeks without it.
3When you buy a licence
Payment is handled entirely by Stripe. Your card number goes to Stripe and never to us. Stripe's own privacy policy governs what it keeps.
Once a payment clears, Stripe tells us the email address you used and a session reference. We store that email, the licence key we generated for it, the Stripe reference, and the date, in a database on our server. The email is used to send you the key, to send it again if you lose it, and to find your purchase if you write to us about it.
Emails are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service. We do not send marketing email, and there is no newsletter to unsubscribe from.
The checkout link carries an identifier from the website's analytics cookies, so a sale can be attributed to the visit that led to it. It contains no personal details.
4The website
diskbuddy.com uses three analytics services to count visits and see which pages people read: Vercel Web Analytics, Google Analytics and Piqo. They record the pages you view, your approximate location from your IP address, and your browser and device type. Piqo sets cookies to recognise a returning browser.
Prices are shown in your local currency by reading your browser's timezone. That happens in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
Our server keeps ordinary access logs, which include IP addresses, for a short period to keep the service running and to investigate abuse.
5How long we keep it
Licence records are kept for as long as the licence is valid, because they are what makes your key work. Activation records are kept alongside them so you can move the key between Macs.
Analytics data is retained according to each provider's defaults. Server logs are rotated within a few weeks.
6Your choices
Email hello@diskbuddy.com and we will tell you what we hold under your address, correct it, or delete it. Deleting a licence record revokes the key, so we will confirm with you first.
You can deactivate any Mac from the app's settings at any time, which marks that installation as inactive on our server.
You can block the website's analytics with any content blocker. The site works exactly the same without them.
7Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the date at the top moves and the change is described here. We will not quietly start collecting something this page says we do not.
